Sweeten your Coffee in 5 Healthy Ways

Black coffee is healthy, but when you add the wrong type of sweeteners to this beverage its health benefits are hampered.  Many coffee drinkers cannot handle the bitter taste of a strong black coffee, which makes them turn to artificial sweeteners or refined sugars. However, since these sugars are associated with many serious health issues like diabetes, heart diseases and cancer, one must avoid them.

You can pull a great espresso shot using our premium Italian coffee capsules and coffee machines; and you have the option to choose from a variety of blends namely Intenso, Classico, Decaf, Cremoso, Forte & Single-Origin Ethiopia. Now, if you want to enjoy these coffees and be able to sweeten it to suit your palate, we suggest some healthy alternatives that you can try adding to your cuppa.

Honey - This naturally occurring golden liquid is the best alternative to sugar. You have probably heard of honey being used in a cup of tea and guess what? You can put it in your coffee too. Since honey has a very strong taste, make sure to add very little to your coffee.

Maple Syrup - Yes, Maple syrup is not just restricted to waffles and pancakes.  Just like honey it is a naturally occurring sugary sweetener, which is healthy. It's important to use pure maple syrup, since the artificial syrups are not good.

Stevia - Derived from the Stevia Rebaudiana plant, Stevia is a no calorie sugar substitute that is used to sweeten a lot of food and drink and is gaining popularity. Stevia has no known adverse health effects and has been shown to lower blood sugar and blood pressure levels. However make sure to 100% pure Stevia only.

Dates - Another natural alternative to sugar, and very high in fibre.  Dates are already used in baking and cooking as a replacement for sugar on a large scale, try adding it to your coffee too. Just soak some pitted dates in water, take them out and then blend them with 1-2 tablespoons of water into a thick paste and add it to your coffee.

Cinnamon - Cinnamon powder adds a warm sweet and nutty flavour to baked products which makes even their smell irresistible. Just try sprinkling the same in your coffee; it will surely reduce the bitterness of coffee. Cinnamon also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is good for the body.

There are many other ways to sweeten coffee in healthy manner, but these are our favourite. You can try out these alternate ways when sipping your black coffee and satisfy those demanding taste buds.

Pro tip:  One can also bite on a piece of chocolate before drinking an espresso if you want to avoid adding anything into the coffee but would like to avoid the bitter taste of the coffee.
