At its core, the Moka pot is a charming stovetop brewer that uses steam pressure to create a robust coffee experience. Typically made from aluminum or steel, this iconic device is named after the Yemeni city of Mocha, renowned for its coffee.
This nifty invention was brought to life by Italian engineer Otello Amleto Spadini back in 1937. Since then, it’s become a beloved fixture in Italian kitchens and beyond. Post-World War II, its fame spread across Southern Europe, earning its place as a go-to for strong, flavorful coffee without the fuss of an espresso machine.
Operating at about 1.5 bars of pressure (much lower than the 9 bars used by espresso machines), the Moka pot delivers a rich, strong coffee that’s often compared to espresso.
Understanding how it works
The Moka pot uses steam pressure to push hot water through the coffee grounds and is made up of three main components:

Separate the Moka pot into its three main components: the bottom chamber, the filter basket, and the top chamber.
Water: Fill the bottom chamber with hot water up to the safety valve, overfilling can affect the brewing process.
Coffee Grounds: Fill the filter basket with any variant of Coffeeza’s range of specialty ground coffee in a fine grind. Level off the grounds but do not tamp them down. Coffeeza's Intenso, Caramel and Belgian Chocolate ground coffees are best enjoyed when brewed in a Moka pot
Simply attach the top chamber to the bottom chamber securely, Ensure that the moka pot is assembled tightly to prevent steam from escaping and to maintain the correct pressure.
Place the Moka pot on the stove over medium heat. Make sure the handle is not directly over the heat source.
As the water heats, it will push through the coffee grounds and fill the top chamber. Once you hear a hissing or gurgling sound, it means the coffee is almost ready. Remove the pot from the heat to avoid burning the coffee. You can add milk and sugar to this thick coffee concentrate.
Tip: After brewing, run the bottom chamber under cold water to stop the extraction process. This helps prevent any burnt or bitter flavors.
